Visas, Vaccinations, and Travel Documents: The Complete Checklist

Plan Early, Avoid Delays

Visa processing can take weeks. With World Cup demand expected to surge applications, begin this process 3-4 months before travel — longer if your nationality typically faces extended processing times.

South Africa Visa Requirements

Visa-Free Countries (90 days)

Citizens of the UK, USA, EU nations, Australia, Canada, and many others receive a free tourist visa on arrival. No application needed — just a valid passport.

Visa-Required Countries

Indian and Pakistani nationals require pre-arranged visas. Processing typically takes 10-15 working days.

Tourist Visa costs:

  • UK: £0 (visa waiver)
  • USA: $0 (visa waiver)
  • India: Approximately ₹2,000-3,000
  • Pakistan: Approximately PKR 8,000-10,000
  • Application process:

    1. Visit the South African Department of Home Affairs website

    2. Book an appointment at your nearest South African embassy or High Commission

    3. Provide completed visa form (TCS or online)

    4. Required documents: Valid passport, proof of accommodation, flight itinerary, bank statements

    5. Attend appointment, provide biometrics if required

    6. Wait for decision (typically 2-3 weeks)

    Zimbabwe and Namibia

Many visitors arrive through South Africa, then day-trip or overnight to Zimbabwe or Namibia. See our Namibia travel guide and Zimbabwe guide for region-specific planning.

Zimbabwe visa: Required for most nationalities (except certain Commonwealth and African nations). Tourist visa valid 3 months, approximately $30-50 USD.

Namibia visa: Visa-free for most nationalities (90 days). No advance application needed.

Both countries issue visas on arrival at major border crossings and airports, but it is more reliable to arrange in advance.

    Health Requirements

    Vaccinations (strongly recommended, not mandatory):

  • Yellow fever — If you're visiting Zimbabwe or other African countries, vaccination is sometimes recommended
  • Typhoid — Common travel recommendation
  • Hepatitis A — Recommended for all travelers
  • Malaria prophylaxis — Consult your doctor, particularly if visiting Kruger or northern regions
  • Check your country's health authority for specific recommendations 6-8 weeks before travel.

COVID-19: As of 2025, COVID-related documentation has been lifted for South Africa. Monitor official requirements closer to October 2027.

    Passport Requirements

  • Valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended return date
  • At least 2 blank pages for stamps
  • No tears, discoloration, or damage
  • If your passport expires during World Cup season, renew now. Processing backlogs are common.

    Travel Insurance

Strongly recommended but not legally required. Cover should include:

  • Trip cancellation/interruption
  • Medical expenses (minimum $100,000)
  • Evacuation insurance (if venturing to remote areas)
  • Sports/activities coverage (if planning adventures)
  • Cost: Typically $100-300 for two-week coverage. See our full travel essentials guide for insurance recommendations.

    eSIM and Connectivity

    Rather than international roaming:

  • Purchase an eSIM from providers like Airalo or Holafly ($10-30 for 7-14 days coverage)
  • Alternatively, purchase a local SIM on arrival in South Africa (Vodacom or Cell C)
  • 4G coverage is excellent in all major cities and venues
  • Money and Currency

  • Currency: South African Rand (ZAR), also used in Zimbabwe, Namibia
  • Exchange rates: Typically 15-20 ZAR per USD (check current rates)
  • ATMs: Widely available in all cities. Avoid withdrawing huge amounts at once
  • Credit cards: Accepted everywhere, inform your bank of travel dates
  • Bring two cards in case one is declined. Cash is useful for small vendors and tips. See our city guides for local cost expectations.

    Customs and Currency Declaration

    Bringing currency into South Africa:

  • No restrictions on cash, but amounts exceeding $10,000 USD must be declared
  • South African currency itself has no import/export limits
  • Prohibited items:

  • Illegal drugs
  • Counterfeit goods
  • Protected animal products (ivory, etc.)
  • Large quantities of alcohol/tobacco beyond personal use
