Kingsmead hosted its first Test in January 1923 when South Africa played England. It was the venue for the legendary "Timeless Test" of 1939, which lasted 10 days before being declared a draw when England had to catch their ship home. The pitch is known to assist pace bowlers, especially early on, due to Durban's humid coastal climate. Kingsmead hosted a 2003 World Cup semi-final and South Africa's record Test total of 658/9 declared against the West Indies.
