Why Visit the Cape Winelands?

One of the world's great wine destinations

The Cape Winelands were established in 1685 when the Dutch East India Company governor Simon van der Stel founded Groot Constantia. Today the region spans hundreds of estates across a dozen distinct valleys, producing wines that compete on the global stage at a fraction of the price of their European counterparts.

The combination of mountain ranges, Atlantic and Indian Ocean influences, and a Mediterranean climate creates conditions of exceptional variety. No other wine region in the Southern Hemisphere offers the same combination of quality, diversity, landscape, and accessibility.

The Wine Regions

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek & Constantia

Each valley has its own character, climate, and wine style. Together they form one of the most compelling wine tourism experiences in the world.

South Africa's wine capital

Stellenbosch

45 minutes from Cape Town

South Africa's premier wine town, set against the backdrop of the Stellenbosch Mountains. The region produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage — South Africa's own grape variety — and some of the continent's finest red blends. The historic university town itself is worth exploring, with oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch architecture, and a restaurant scene that punches well above its weight.

Franschhoek

1 hour from Cape Town

Founded by French Huguenot refugees in the late 17th century, Franschhoek — French for "French Corner" — is the most gastronomically celebrated town in South Africa. The valley produces outstanding Chardonnay and Semillon, and is home to several of the country's most celebrated restaurants. The Franschhoek Wine Tram offers a leisurely way to hop between estates across the valley.

Cape Town's oldest wine valley

Constantia

20 minutes from the city centre

The Cape Peninsula's southern wine valley is the closest wine region to the Cape Town city centre. Constantia's cool, mountain-influenced climate produces some of South Africa's finest Sauvignon Blanc. Groot Constantia — the original estate, established in 1685 — is South Africa's oldest wine producer and a national monument.

Fine dining in the vineyards

The Cape Winelands have developed a restaurant culture that now draws visitors from around the world independently of the wine. Franschhoek in particular — a town of fewer than 15,000 people — is home to several of South Africa's most celebrated restaurants.

Most large estates offer their own restaurant experience, typically serving modern Cape cuisine that draws on both the region's European heritage and South African ingredients. A long lunch on a vineyard terrace, with mountain views and a bottle of estate Chardonnay, is one of the most pleasurable ways to spend a rest day during the tournament.

Wine & Cricket: fitting it in

Match day with morning wine tour

Many matches at Newlands start in the afternoon. A half-day Constantia tour (20 minutes from the ground) is comfortably achievable before a 14:00 or 15:00 start. Two or three estate visits, a light lunch, and back in time for the first over.

Rest day full Winelands experience

A full-day tour to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek covers both valleys. Depart Cape Town at 09:00, visit three or four estates, sit down for lunch at a vineyard restaurant, and return by early evening. One of the finest ways to spend a day off.

Pre-tournament arrival day

Arriving in Cape Town a day before your first match? A private Constantia valley tour in the afternoon makes for an elegant introduction to South Africa. The estates are close, relaxed, and far less crowded than the outlying valleys.

Post-tournament extension

Staying on after the final? Build a two-day Winelands itinerary: one day based in Stellenbosch, the second in Franschhoek. Book a restaurant table in advance for dinner — Franschhoek in particular rewards an early reservation.
