Sabi Sand Game Reserve
Africa's finest private wildlife reserve. The world's best leopard sightings. Off-road tracking, night drives, and some of the most celebrated safari lodges on the continent.
About Sabi Sand Game Reserve
Sabi Sand Game Reserve covers approximately 65,000 hectares of prime Lowveld wilderness adjacent to Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces. It was established in 1950 from a consortium of private landowners who recognised the conservation value of their collective properties. The fences between Sabi Sand and Kruger were permanently removed in 1993, allowing free movement of wildlife across a combined area of over 22,000 km².
The reserve takes its name from the Sabie and Sand rivers, both of which flow through the property and provide permanent water year-round — a key factor in the extraordinary wildlife density for which the reserve is famous.
Sabi Sand is globally synonymous with leopard. Individual leopards have been habituated to game vehicles over multiple generations — in some cases, the same animals tracked by rangers for 20 years or more. Sabi Sand routinely offers leopard sightings of a quality impossible anywhere else in Africa, with animals feeding on kills in trees, raising cubs and interacting naturally with minimal disturbance.
Off-road driving is permitted throughout Sabi Sand, allowing rangers to leave tracks and follow wildlife without restriction. Night drives are permitted, with spotlights used to locate nocturnal species including leopard, lion, genets, civets and small cats. These activities are prohibited in Kruger National Park itself.
Wildlife
All Big Five are resident within Sabi Sand. The reserve is particularly renowned for leopard and wild dog sightings.

Luxury Lodges
Sabi Sand contains some of the most celebrated safari lodges in the world. The following are among the highest-rated properties in the reserve.
Singita Ebony Lodge
One of Africa's most awarded safari lodges. Singita Ebony sits on the banks of the Sand River and offers 12 suites with private plunge pools and decks overlooking the river. Singita's wine cellar — stocked with over 7,000 bottles of South African and international wine — is a defining feature.
Londolozi
Londolozi has been at the forefront of South African conservation and luxury hospitality since 1926. The Varty family transformed a hunting farm into one of the first model conservation-and-tourism operations in Africa. Five separate camps (Tree Camp, Granite Camp, Pioneer Camp, Founders Camp and Varty Camp) cater to different budgets, all sharing the same exceptional guiding team and the private traversing area renowned for leopard sightings.
&Beyond Kirkman's Kamp
A historical property on the banks of the Sand River, Kirkman's Kamp is named after Harry Kirkman, one of the original game rangers of the Sabi Game Reserve region in the 1920s. The property has been sensitively restored, retaining the charm of the original colonial-era farmhouse whilst offering modern luxury standards. 18 cottages with private verandas.
Earth Lodge (Sabi Sabi)
Sabi Sabi's Earth Lodge is built almost entirely underground, virtually invisible in the landscape. 13 suites and a presidential villa. The lodge is characterised by organic forms, natural materials and an immersive connection to the surrounding bush.
Pricing note: Sabi Sand lodges are all-inclusive and priced per person sharing per night, including all meals, twice-daily game drives, game drive equipment, laundry and some activities. Prices range from approximately R8,000 to R35,000 per person per night (2027 estimates). Most lodges require a minimum 2-night stay.
