South Africa Safari — Cricket World Cup 2027
Africa's most accessible and diverse safari destination. From the vast plains of Kruger to the exclusive lodges of Sabi Sand — all within reach of your match schedule.
Why South Africa Is Africa's Most Popular Safari Destination
South Africa has the most developed safari infrastructure on the continent. World-class road networks, a domestic flight network connecting major cities to safari airstrips, and accommodation ranging from SANParks rest camps to some of the world's most awarded luxury lodges make it accessible to every type of traveller.
The country supports all Big Five animals — lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and buffalo — along with cheetah, African wild dog, hippo, crocodile and over 500 bird species. Several reserves are malaria-free, an important consideration for families and visitors from non-endemic regions.
For Cricket World Cup 2027 visitors, South Africa's position as the tournament's primary host country is ideal. The five major venues — Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein and Gqeberha — are all within practical reach of at least one significant safari destination.
October and November, when the tournament takes place, are among the best months for wildlife viewing. The dry season has thinned the vegetation, wildlife concentrates around remaining water sources, and daytime temperatures are warm without the extreme heat of mid-summer.
South Africa's Premier Safari Reserves
Four world-class destinations, each offering a distinct experience within reach of the tournament cities.

Kruger National Park
One of Africa's largest game reserves and South Africa's premier wildlife destination. Kruger spans 19,485 km² from the Limpopo River in the north to the Crocodile River in the south — a distance of 350 km. The park supports 147 mammal species, 507 bird species, 114 reptile species and over 1,700 plant species.

Sabi Sand Game Reserve
Adjacent to Kruger National Park with no fences separating the two, Sabi Sand is widely regarded as the finest private wildlife reserve in Africa. The reserve is home to some of the continent's most habituated leopards — some tracked by rangers for over 20 years — and delivers consistently exceptional sightings of all Big Five. Off-road driving is permitted throughout.

Madikwe Game Reserve
South Africa's fourth-largest game reserve, Madikwe was established in 1991 through Operation Phoenix — one of the largest wildlife translocation projects of its time, restoring game to previously degraded agricultural land. The reserve is malaria-free, making it particularly suitable for families with young children and those with health concerns. All Big Five are present, along with both cheetah and wild dog.

Pilanesberg National Park
Situated in the crater of an ancient alkaline volcano approximately 2.5 billion years old, Pilanesberg is the fourth-largest national park in South Africa. Its location in the transitional zone between the Kalahari and Lowveld biomes gives it exceptional biodiversity. The park is malaria-free and an easy day trip or overnight from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Safari from the Tournament Cities
From Johannesburg
Johannesburg is southern Africa's safari hub. Kruger National Park is a 5-hour drive via the N4 or R40. Pilanesberg is 2.5 hours via the N14. Madikwe is 3.5 hours via the R49. Same-day or overnight fly-in safaris to Sabi Sand depart from O.R. Tambo International Airport, with lodges arranging private charter transfers (approx. 45 minutes flying time).
From Cape Town
Cape Town is further from the major game reserves but offers excellent nearby safari options. Aquila Private Game Reserve is a 2-hour drive and offers Big Five sightings on a day or overnight basis. Inverdoorn Game Reserve is similar in distance. For a full Kruger experience, domestic flights from Cape Town to Nelspruit (KMIA) take approximately 2 hours, with lodges arranging road or air transfers from there.
